A private surf lesson is the fastest way to go from the sand to your first wave. For 90 minutes, one CPR-certified instructor focuses entirely on you — reading the ocean, fixing your paddle and pop-up, and putting you in the right spot for the right wave. It’s the best value on LBI for surfers who want real progress in a single session, whether you’re a nervous first-timer or refining technique.
What One-on-One Coaching Actually Gets You
With a 1:1 ratio, every minute is spent on your surfing — not split across a group. Lessons start with beach instruction on safety and technique, then move into the water with your provided wetsuit and board.
You’ll work on ocean reading, surfboard handling, paddling, pop-up timing, wave catching, and surf etiquette. Most first-timers stand up during their session, and warm late-summer water helps — NOAA data puts the NJ ocean near 75°F in August.

How Scheduling and Start Times Work
We don’t run lessons every hour on the hour like most surf schools. We watch the tides and ocean conditions and run just one or two shifts a day, scheduled for when the water is at its best — so your lesson lands in the best surf the day has to offer, not just the next open slot.
You’ll receive your exact start time by 6 PM the night before, with a final confirmation the morning of in case conditions shift. If the surf isn’t safe, we reschedule — every private and group surf lesson we teach is backed by our 100% Positive Experience Guarantee.
Safety, Instructors, and What to Bring
All South End instructors are CPR-certified and fully insured, and private lessons run at a 1:1 ratio for maximum attention. Swimming ability is required to participate.
Bring sunscreen, a towel, and water. We provide the surfboard and wetsuit, so there’s nothing heavy to haul. Arrive 20 minutes early at our shop for your wetsuit fitting.
