Lesson Start Times
We don’t run surf lessons on a fixed hourly schedule. Instead, we choose the best start time based on ocean conditions and tides. By 6 PM the night before your surf lesson, we contact you with your exact start time. We’ll confirm again the morning of camp in case conditions change overnight. This flexible scheduling helps ensure the best possible experience—right in line with our Positive Experience Guarantee.

Just hydration, sunscreen, and a towel. Swimming ability required.
Safety
1:1 surfer-to-instructor ratio, ensuring safety and attention. South End’s instructors are CPR-certified and fully insured. You must be able to swim to participate.

What age do you have to be to take a private surf lesson in Beach Haven?
Private surf lessons are open to anyone ages 6 and up. The minimum age reflects the level of focus and physical coordination needed to paddle out, time a wave, and pop up on the board safely.
Does my child need to know how to swim before taking a surf lesson?
Yes — swimming ability is required for all participants. You don’t need to be a competitive swimmer, but everyone in the water should be comfortable handling themselves if they fall off the board.
What should we bring to a surf lesson?
Just sunscreen, a towel, and a water bottle. We provide the surfboard and wetsuit, so there’s nothing else to haul to the beach.
Do you provide the surfboard and wetsuit?
Yes, both are included with your lesson. Plan to arrive 15 minutes before your start time at our shop at 220 S Bay Ave so we can get you fitted for your wetsuit before heading to the water.
Where exactly does the surf lesson take place?
Private surf lessons and camps are held at Ocean Street beach in Beach Haven. Check in first at our shop at 220 S Bay Ave — arrive 15 minutes early for wetsuit fitting — and we’ll get you to the water from there.

Yes — all South End instructors are CPR-certified and fully insured. Private lessons run at a 1:1 instructor-to-student ratio, so your instructor’s full attention is on you for the entire 90 minutes.
